Information Processing and Commitment∗

چکیده
Beliefs are often found to be sticky and rather immune to new information. In this paper we highlight a specific mechanism that raises resistance to incorporate new information. We provide results from a lab study in the context of an estimation task where subjects need to provide an estimate about an objective state of the world. In this context we provide causal evidence that commitment to a first opinion leads to a neglect of new and challenging information. Investigating the sources of this effect, we show that our findings are well explained by an internal desire to act consistently. We also present a simple model that formalizes how a desire for consistency can produce our pattern of findings. JEL classifications: C91, D03, D83

متن کاملMulti-prover Commitments Against Non-signaling Attacks
We reconsider the concept of two-prover (and more generally: multi-prover) commitments, as introduced in the late eighties in the seminal work by Ben-Or et al. As was recently shown by Crépeau et al., the security of known two-prover commitment schemes not only relies on the explicit assumption that the two provers cannot communicate, but also depends on what their information processing capabi...
متن کاملThe Effect of Behavioral Assortment on Selection Dynamics: Externalities, Information Processing and Subjective Commitment
The role of group selection in the evolution of social adaptations is a contentious issue. It is unclear whether all adaptations for social interaction should be considered group selected or whether the title ‘group selection’ should be confined to cases in which selection acts at the level of the group (i.e. interdemic selection). No matter what definition of group selection one uses, it is ne...
